Purpose of the Endorsement

The Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement recognizes students who have participated in practical Bareboat Charter Master training and demonstrated the skills necessary to be a competent, safe, and contributing crew member aboard a bareboat charter yacht.

The endorsement is issued by the practical training instructor and is intended for two types of students:

  1. Students working toward Bareboat Charter Master certification who complete practical training but do not fully meet all the requirements of the Bareboat Charter Master assessment rubrics.

  2. Students who want to be competent bareboat charter crew members but have no intention of becoming a Bareboat Charter Master or taking responsibility for commanding a charter yacht.

The endorsement recognizes the student's demonstrated practical skills without indicating that they have met the full competency requirements to serve as Bareboat Charter Master.

Online Coursework Requirements

No online coursework is required to receive the Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement. The practical training instructor may issue the endorsement based on the student's demonstrated competency during practical training.

However, NauticEd strongly encourages students to complete relevant online courses, as this knowledge helps them become more knowledgeable, confident, and effective crew members.

Students pursuing the full Bareboat Charter Master qualification must complete all required online courses in the Bareboat Charter Master Bundle, in addition to successfully demonstrating the practical competencies required for sign-off.

Even when a student has completed all required online coursework, they may still receive the Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement if they do not fully meet the practical assessment requirements for Bareboat Charter Master.

When Instructors Should Issue the Endorsement

Instructors should consider issuing the Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement when a student has demonstrated sufficient practical competency to be a contributing crew member but either does not intend to pursue, or has not yet achieved, the full Bareboat Charter Master qualification.

For example, a student may perform well throughout the practical training but need additional development in specific areas such as:

  • Docking and close-quarters maneuvering

  • Mediterranean mooring

  • Navigation and passage planning

  • Other competencies identified in the Bareboat Charter Master assessment rubrics

Rather than withholding recognition of the student's accomplishments, the instructor may issue the Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement, provided the student has demonstrated the necessary competency to serve as a safe and effective crew member.

The endorsement should not be issued automatically simply because a student attended the training. The instructor must be satisfied that the student has demonstrated the practical skills appropriate for the crew-level endorsement.

Remediation and Upgrading to Bareboat Charter Master

When a student is pursuing Bareboat Charter Master but falls short of one or more practical assessment requirements, the instructor should:

  1. Identify the deficiencies. Clearly identify which Bareboat Charter Master assessment rubrics the student has not satisfactorily completed.

  2. Provide a remediation plan. Explain the specific skills requiring additional practice or development.

  3. Issue the Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement, provided the student meets the crew-level competency expectations.

  4. Encourage additional practice and training. The student can work independently, with other qualified sailors, or with an instructor to improve the identified skills.

  5. Arrange reassessment when ready. Once the student believes they have achieved the required competency, they may seek reassessment from any qualified NauticEd instructor.

The reassessing instructor can evaluate the student's outstanding competencies. Once the student has successfully satisfied all remaining practical requirements and completed the required online coursework, they may receive the full Bareboat Charter Master sign-off.

Key Distinction for Instructors

Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement: Confirms that the student has demonstrated practical competency to participate as a capable and contributing crew member aboard a bareboat charter yacht. No online coursework is required.

Bareboat Charter Master: Confirms that the student has satisfied the complete practical assessment requirements and the required online coursework to qualify for the full Bareboat Charter Master sign-off.

The Bareboat Charter Crew Endorsement is both a standalone achievement for students who wish to crew and an intermediate recognition for students progressing toward Bareboat Charter Master.
